Action Research

Action research is an instrument that principals can utilize to unravel the complex labyrinth of demands that take up most of their daily activities. According to the text, "Leading With Passion and Knowledge," administrative inquiry will allow the principal to take responsibility of their own professional development, and become the head learner of their school. Furthermore, administrative inquiry "refers to the process of a principal engaging in systematic, intentional study of his/her own administrative practice and taking action for change based on what he/she learns as a result of inquiry."Once a joint "vision is agreed upon and is communicated, it is necessary to understand that the need for inquiry is an essential component in order to establish a firm foundation for school improvement."

The benefits of action research in the educational setting include:

  • Action research allows the "principal to engage in systematic, intentional study of his/her own administrative practice and take action for change based on what he/she learns as a result of inquiry."
  • Action research can allow educators to make better decisions to improve an issue or problem in the school or classroom by reflection, use of information and data collection.
  • Action research promotes new ideas and ingenuity through research and provide a learning experience and sense of ownership between teachers and students.
  • Action research provides sources of data that is used to develop schools districts.
  • Action research is a powerful professional development tool for principals.
  • Action research helps the teacher get familiar  with the way students will be learning their course and curriculum, focusing on the different learning styles, personal beliefs, and diversity within the classroom.
